Creating the perfect base

Sunday, 18 March 2018

I've never been huge foundation wearer, instead opting for a BB or CC cream for an everyday make up look. However, I do like to wear foundation at the weekends and particularly for nights out, but I kept finding that no matter what foundation I applied - high end or drug store, it never lasted well on my skin. Until fairly recently, I had a really bad / non existent skin care routine and since I've improved that and experimented with different products, I've really noticed a difference in the longevity of my foundation. Four simple steps leave my foundation looking immaculate all day.

1./Cleanse and tone - Dr Botanicals Cleanse and Tone Cleanser (full review here)
I've raved about this product so many times on my blog, but I just love it so much. I apply this as my first step after showering in the morning. It's so refreshing and leaves my skin feeling really clean, ready for the rest of my skincare steps. I love that it cleanses and tones in one, combining two steps into one, which is perfect for first thing in the morning when you don't want to faff around with lots of different products. Cleansing is so important before applying foundation as it provides a clean surface for the foundation to be applied to, creating a much smoother and healthier look.

2./Apply serum - The Body Shop Vitamin C Skin Reviver
After cleansing and toning, I apply a serum. I had always been a bit sceptical about serums and wasn't 100% sure what they did. However, I tried a sample of one last year and really noticed how well it helped my make up to stay in place and I was hooked. I went to The Body Shop to see what serums they had on offer and was recommended the Vitamin C Skin Reviver which I love. It enhances natural radiance and leaves a silky smooth finish, which is a perfect base for foundation. I love the slight scent of orange that The Body Shop Vitamin C Skin Reviver offers as it's so refreshing first thing in the morning, preparing me for the day ahead. I think a serum has made the most amount of difference to the longevity of my make up - it's a 'must' in my skincare routine now.

After having applied a serum, I then apply a moisturiser. My favourite is the Vitamin E Intense Moisture Cream from The Body Shop. This one is slightly thicker than their normal moisturiser (Vitamin E Moisture Cream) and I find the more intense moisturiser is perfect for my skin as I suffer from slightly more dry skin, especially in the winter. A moisturiser is a 'must' for me before applying foundation (though I know others will disagree), but for me it smooths out my skin, removing any dryness which foundation can often cling to (gross!) allowing for a seamless base for the foundation. I really can't recommend The Body Shop Vitamin E Intense Moisture Cream enough, it's been my 'go-to' moisturiser for years and I can't see that changing anytime soon. I've also got my boyfriend hooked on it as no men's products are as hydrating on his skin as this one.

The last step before applying foundation is primer. I always leave about 5 or so minutes after moisturising to allow the moisturiser to really sink into my skin before applying The POREfessional Face Primer from Benefit. I love this primer and have done so for years, having tried others, I've never found them to be as good as this one. It feels so smooth on my skin and leaves it feeling really silky. I like the consistency of this as it's a really lightweight balm, it's largely the consistency that has put me off other primers in the past. Whilst POREfessional claims to minimise the appearance of pores, I don't find it to be as effective as I'd like. However, for me, that's not the main reason for using it. Instead, I like to use it to help my make up stay put, which it definitely does. I really notice the difference when I forget to apply this, my make up doesn't last nearly as long.

After following these 4 steps, my skin is all prepped and primed for foundation. Since following this routine, I've noticed that my make up lasts all day without oxidising or looking blotchy. I don't follow this routine daily as it's too much for me before work and as I mentioned, I don't wear foundation everyday. However, these simple steps are perfect for the weekend / night out and are key to long lasting foundation.

How do you create the perfect base for foundation?

  1. Love the sound of the body shop serum, I've never tried one but it sounds so good. A primer is a must and I always make sure I moisturise too :) Lovely products!
